How does donor support directly impact the patients and families served by Angela Hospice?
Donors and their donations, no matter the size, play a HUGE role in supporting the mission and work at Angela Hospice. Donations are used to provide care and services to patients and their families beyond what is covered by other sources (i.e., Medicare, Medicaid, or private insurance). Donations help provide valuable programs to our patients and families such as grief care, and specialized services such as music therapy and aromatherapy, just to name a few.
Why do nonprofit organizations like Angela Hospice need fundraisers?
The dedicated team that makes up our Community Outreach and Philanthropy Department helps donors to fulfill their goals for giving, by connecting them with meaningful ways to support caring programs that align with their values. The team also helps to raise awareness in the communities we serve, engaging businesses, groups, and individuals in opportunities to make a positive impact to help others.
The crucial funding raised by these efforts enables the operation of our hospice Care Centers and funds other programs that make Angela Hospice’s care so special.
What trends are you seeing in philanthropy today, and how is Angela Hospice adapting to meet the needs of donors and the community?
As donors have become more educated about their donations, it’s important to them to know how and where their dollars are being used. Angela Hospice strives to be a tremendous steward of EVERY donor dollar. We are proud that more than 90% of every dollar given to Angela Hospice goes toward programs and services.
Donors’ gifts are not always monetary, but also come in the currency of time and talents. Angela Hospice is extremely honored to have an amazing team of more than 180 volunteers who selflessly dedicate their time, giving more than we can ever quantify.
How is Angela Hospice involved in the community and why is community engagement important?
Angela Hospice has a committed team of individuals who are active in the community, the Community Liaison Team. This team frequently visits senior centers, churches, schools, senior facilities, hospitals, and other civic and community groups with the purpose of educating our community, not only about Angela Hospice, but hospice services and opportunities in general.
Hospice is a relatively new concept in America (since the early 80s), and there is still a lot of misconceptions about this valuable service. Our teams provide free community education and programs such as the Speakers Bureau and the African American Church Empowerment Project to educate and provide opportunities to learn more about the services Angela Hospice offers.
What are some other ways that the community can support Angela Hospice?
While traditional gifts—like cash, credit cards, and checks—remain the backbone of charitable support, they’re far from the only ways to make a meaningful impact. Today, donors have more creative options than ever to support the causes they care about. For example:
Commemorative Giving: Often people find it comforting to honor a loved one with a physical symbol on the grounds of the Angela Hospice Livonia Care Center. Our commemorative giving program offers a unique way to support the mission of Angela Hospice and help people in need, while also paying tribute to someone special. Learn more about Commemorative Giving.
Stocks and Mutual Funds: Making a donation with appreciated stock is a way to give generously, allow 100% of the funds to go directly to Angela Hospice, and avoid capital gains tax.
Donor Advised Funds: A Donor Advised Fund (DAF) is a type of charitable investment account that provides an immediate tax benefit to you, and allows you to grant funds to charities such as Angela Hospice. Granting to Angela Hospice through your DAF is simple and easy. You can recommend a gift to Angela Hospice today, or on a recurring basis—monthly, quarterly, semi-annually or annually—to help support those who are benefiting from our caring and compassionate programs. To learn more, please visit Donor Advised Funds.
Matching Gifts – Double Your Impact: Thousands of companies actually match the charitable donations their employees make. Some companies match gifts for their retirees too—or provide a contribution for those who volunteer their time. It’s a great way to magnify your impact and support even more patients and families at a sensitive time of life. To learn more and to see if your employer will match your donation, visit: Matching Gifts.
Planned Giving: Planned giving through a trust attorney or other legal professional will support Angela Hospice’s compassionate work while establishing a lasting legacy for your family. Planned gifts, such as bequests or charitable gift annuities, provide a way for donors to make a positive charitable impact while also reducing financial burdens for themselves or their families. Tax benefits include avoiding capital gains tax on donations of appreciated property, and estate tax exemptions for gifts payable upon the donor’s death. Your estate or financial planner can work with you to establish a giving plan that meets your needs and wishes, and supports the programs that are most meaningful to you. For more about planned giving, contact Jennifer Dale at 734.953.6009.
Gifts in Kind: Donations of gift cards, prizes and auction items can support Angela Hospice’s mission in creative ways. You can view our wish list for ideas, or contact us with your idea.
