Is it time for Hospice?

If you or someone you love has become very ill and is not expected to live much longer, you may want to consider hospice as part of total health care. Making a decision to have hospice is often a difficult decision for people because it means acknowledging that death is near. However, hospice can be a tremendous blessing for people as it provides so much support and comfort at the end of life.

Unfortunately, most people elect hospice care long after they are actually eligible, and wish they had done so sooner. Almost all insurances, including Medicare and Medicaid, cover home hospice costs. If you are unsure whether it is time for hospice, our doctors and nurses are available to answer any questions for you.

The following are some of the reasons that may make a person appropriate for hospice. Answering yes to any of these questions may mean it is time to consider hospice.

Ask yourself if you or your loved one…

  • Has been told by a doctor that there is a life limiting illness.
  • Is receiving life prolonging treatment that is no longer helpful.
  • Is tired of continuing life prolonging treatments for the illness.
  • Is slowly losing weight without trying.
  • Is unable to care for basic needs by themselves, such as feeding, bathing, dressing, walking or going to the bathroom.
  • Has been to the hospital over and over again in the last few months.
  • Is spending most of the day in a bed or chair.
  • Has fallen several times in the last few months.
  • Has difficulty breathing even while resting.

Hospice is not for everyone, but the sooner a person elects hospice the more they will benefit from hospice services.
