Caring for Our Community: Promoting Health Literacy

Oct 26, 2022

Lisa C. Norton, Communications & Philanthropy Manager

October is Health Literacy Month, a time to raise awareness about the importance of being able to find, understand, and use information regarding healthcare options — and the impact this has on the health of individuals.

For Angela Hospice, promoting health literacy related to end-of-life care options and concerns is an important part of our community outreach year-round.

“We know that the more awareness and education people have about opportunities available to them when facing a healthcare decision, the better equipped they will be to make the best care choices for themselves or a loved one,” said Lisa Norton, Angela Hospice Communications and Philanthropy Manager. “When our community is empowered to advocate for their health needs, they’ll be able to experience better outcomes, and that is so important at such a critical time.”

Community Outreach

In addition to presenting at health events throughout the community aimed at promoting awareness to individuals and families, our Speakers Bureau is available to speak to local groups and organizations. Angela Hospice is launching educational programming for local healthcare partners as well.

In addition, our African American Church Empowerment Project and Faith Community Empowerment Project were specifically designed to reach underserved populations. These projects partner with local congregations to provide training on grief and loss, as well as end-of-life care options, to better equip community members as they care for their loved ones and each other.

For the community at large, Angela Cares was launched in the spring, a virtual speakers series highlighting valuable topics presented by the experts on Angela Hospice’s team. Past topics have ranged from mindfulness to palliative care, to caring for someone with dementia.

All of this programming is provided free of charge to our community. To register for an Angela Cares presentation, or to a request a presentation from our Empowerment Projects or Speakers Bureau for your business or group, please use the links above.

The Gift of Time

Toby has spent countless hours in the well-worn chair of his basement workshop. You might peek inside and see him happily “tinkering” away. But “tinkering” doesn’t really convey what he’s up to…

Toby, nicknamed “The Clock Guy,” found his passion in life almost by accident. His wife Leanne’s grandfather collected clocks, and after he passed away, Leanne’s grandmother asked for Toby’s help to repair some of her favorite clocks.

“She says, ‘Give it a whirl,’” Toby recalled. “I didn’t want to take it apart because it involved doing some things that I couldn’t reverse. I didn’t have the tools for that,” he continued.

But lo and behold, he was able to get the clock to strike again. And he’s fixed hundreds of clocks since.
